Lure Tech (Keeping in tune)
To go along with these lure tech articles I'd best sort of show you guys where we are coming from.
You see, as I've said, many lures just do NOT work as described out of the packet. They don't.
So, as has been said in these articles, we alter or tune them to suit.
Slow floaters, slow, very slow sinkers, perpetual suspenders, pull down Z-Claw subsurface walkers..the list goes on. In fact, we often tune lures to our particular marks and then, take the selected lures with us when we know where we are going as, obviously, you'll understand that you can't carry every lure you own.
Today, we spent another 3 hours tuning lures. Paul Butel 'St Ouen' popped along to collect his Tenryu Injection (A great soft plastics rod btw) and in the process, he too had a play at the local sea pool.
This pool is ideal for this type of tuning as we have very shallow, to 8ft deep water that is nearly always usable for this type of tuning effort.
Today, we constructed:
Lucky Craft 'Pointer 128' suspenders, Bomber 15a suspenders, Tideminnow 175 and 145 super slow float and perpetual suspend. Z-Claw pull down sub walk and a few Savager suspenders.
Around 10 lures in 3 -- 3 1/2 hours. As you can see, it's work that is time consuming.

Paul Butel's arm sports the LC Pointer 128 suspender. They are very highly thought of baits on the pro US Bass circuit but, like every other suspender we've ever tried, they just don't in salt water. So, we modify and reap the benefits of this super 'jerkbait'.

Duo Tideminnow 175, now suspends and has a 1" per second rise rate at 14 deg C. VSF = " Very slow float".

OSP 'Rudra' set to 'perpetual suspend TOP and Below.., Savager suspender set to very slow 'parallel' sink.

A Bass might see this.. 2 plugs, 1 a mirror image.

The same 175mm Tideminnow riding at 18" down in suspension. In 18 seconds it will just break surface. So, in actual fishing, when I crank and the plug runs down to depth and I STOP. The plug will slowly rise but..I'll know exactly where it is in the water column.

Z-Claw's..one set to dive subsurface and stay walking under the water at medium pace.

Kev with a Savager..as seen in the following video..
I hope this post whets your appetite enough to start exploring the wonderful world of lure tuning. It would take Kev and I an age to discuss ALL the variants but they are worth the effort. Now hopefully, with these articles and this little video, you can see what our lures do when we STOP !
Nothing much eh, but enough to drive Bass mad and they just can't resist sucking it in. Note: the slightly slack line in the video to allow that to happen. Little twitches and slides etc activate the bait or, move the hooks on the bait. this is often enough to simulate 'life'.
Next article will discuss hitting structure on purpose with your plugs..
Thanks for reading and hope it makes sense.
